The first year at the marina, we discovered the mess that the sea birds “terns” can do to a boat in the matter of a weekend, if they decide to turn your boat into their home. We needed a scare crow! Rainbow came with a rubber full sized rat which we tied to the boom-kin. The rat worked wonders for two full summers, even one morning it fended off an osprey which thought it to be a morning meal! In October, 2012, we encountered a bad storm while in Lunenburg Harbour for the launch of Bluenose II, and lost our dear rat. We couldn’t find another one, but my brother, Jim, offered up one of his plastic crows as a replacement. We could easily secure the crow better, and he is just as good as the rat in keeping away those nasty little birds.
