1/3 cup margarine or butter
6 tbsp cocoa powder
2-3/4 cup medium-fine soft bread crumbs*
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 cup chopped nuts
1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
2 tbsp or more water
1 cup brown sugar, packed
Preheat oven to 350F and grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
Melt butter in microwave.
In large bowl combine, bread crumbs, cocoa powder, baking powder, nuts and chocolate chips (or hold off adding chocolate chips to batter and instead sprinkle them on top of batter to melt on top during baking or the last few minutes of baking) and brown sugar.
Make well in centre and add melted butter, egg and water.
Stir together and add water and beat slightly with electric mixer until correct consistency for batter.
Spread evenly in greased pan. Bake 25-30 minutes until done. Cool completely before cutting.
*Do not use commercial dry bread crumbs. Bread that is at least 3 days old works best. Use a food processor or blender to bread into medium-fine crumbs.
